If you have already attempted ISLPR and did not reach Band 4 in writing, or if you are preparing and want to make sure your writing is at the right standard, this guide is for you. Improving your ISLPR writing score is about targeting the right things — not just writing more.

Understand what Band 4 writing actually looks like

Before you can improve your writing, you need to know what you are aiming for. Band 4 ISLPR writing is professional writing. It is the kind of writing a qualified teacher would produce in an Australian school — a formal letter to parents, a professional report, a workplace communication.

Band 4 writing is not perfect writing. Minor errors are acceptable. What Band 4 requires is consistent grammatical accuracy, professional register, clear sentence structure, and complete task fulfilment. Understanding this standard is the starting point for improving your score.

Identify your specific errors — do not guess

The most efficient way to improve your ISLPR writing is to identify exactly what errors you are making. Not general errors — specific ones. Is it tense consistency? Article usage? Sentence structure? Register? Prepositions?

Every teacher has a different error profile. Two teachers can have the same ISLPR writing band for completely different reasons. Improving your score requires knowing your specific errors — not following a generic improvement programme.

Fix grammar consistency before anything else

Grammar consistency is the foundation of Band 4 writing. If your grammar is inconsistent — correct in some sentences and wrong in others — no amount of vocabulary improvement or structural work will push you to Band 4.

Focus on the grammar errors that appear most frequently in your writing. Fix them systematically. Check every piece of writing specifically for those errors before you consider it complete.

Raise your writing register to professional level

If your grammar is accurate but you are still not reaching Band 4, register is usually the issue. Professional register means formal vocabulary, no contractions, no casual expressions, and a tone that consistently sounds like a qualified professional.

Read examples of professional Australian workplace writing. Notice the vocabulary, the sentence structure, the tone. This is what you are matching in ISLPR writing.

Practise with real ISLPR task types

ISLPR writing tasks are professional in nature — formal letters, reports, workplace communications. Practising with IELTS tasks or general writing tasks will not improve your ISLPR writing score. You need to practise specifically with ISLPR-style tasks to build the right habits and formats.

Get feedback on every piece of writing

Writing without feedback is the slowest way to improve. You need someone to identify your errors, explain why they are errors, and show you what the corrected version looks like. At IELTS Manzil, every piece of writing our students submit receives detailed written feedback with audio explanation. You understand not just what is wrong but why — and that understanding is what drives real improvement.

Track your progress against Band 4 criteria

Improvement without measurement is guesswork. After each practice task, your writing should be benchmarked against Band 4 criteria. Are your errors reducing? Is your register becoming more consistent? Is your task fulfilment improving? Tracking progress against the actual standard you need is what tells you when you are genuinely ready.
